Go-ahead for City's £74m 'Ski Slope' tower

A £74 million glass office block nicknamed the Ski Slope has been given the go-ahead in the City.

The 13-storey building will be built on the site of a former telephone exchange next to Moorgate Tube station and the Barbican.

It was granted planning permission after the Corporation of London was assured it would not affect views of St Paul's.

Architects HKR designed the sloping roof of the 150ft-high commercial complex in Fore Street in response to concerns from Barbican residents that it would block out sunlight. David Roden, chief architect, said: "There were a number of issues in gaining planning consent.

"It sits within the background of St Paul's and we had to ensure the western view was not affected. The retracted roof means that not only can light pass through to residents in the Barbican, it also maximises light into the building itself."

Landlord Telereal wants to attract banks and legal firms as tenants. The building is due to be completed in spring 2010.
