Golden Gate Bridge gets a giant suicide net to catch the jumpers

A giant net is to be hung under the Golden Gate Bridge to catch jumpers trying to kill themselves.

It is designed to save the 20 or so people a year who plunge from the 245ft-high San Francisco landmark.

In 2007 38 killed themselves in this way and 19 have died so far this year.

There have been more than 2,000 deaths of jumpers from the bridge since it opened in 1937, making it America's most popular suicide site. Those who leap off reach speeds of 88mph before hitting the water after four seconds.

If they do not die on impact they drown in the strong current. Great white sharks are sometimes seen swimming underneath.

The bridge is already fitted with suicide hotline telephones and patrols look out for anyone planning to jump.
