Golden moment in the St Martin's makeover

07 September 2007
Rev Nicholas Holtam will bless the regilded weathervane that towers above Trafalgar Square on the spire of St Martin-in-the-Fields.
The service is a prelude to the official reopening of the church for worship on Sunday 30 September, followed by the launch of an appeal to raise the final £4 million needed to complete the project.
Work began in February last year to restore the 18th century church, build a new church hall and facilities for its work with homeless people, and redesign its popular café. Mr Holtam said: "This said: "It is an important source of revenue and of life. It's hard to listen to music in church without being aware of the divine - it fits with our work.
"I really hope people will enjoy coming back here. With 90 per cent of the funds raised, we just need everyone who cares about St Martin's to stretch a bit further to bring to a successful close the most important voluntary sector project in London this decade."
