England fan: Gordon Brown has already been spotted watching an England international football match. He attended the recent friendly against Germany with Chancellor Angela Merkel
However,in the wake of a week of political turmoil for the Labour party, the decision opens up possible new charges of hypocrisy.
Mr Brown, who has always traded on his reputation as an honest, plain-speaking Scotsman, may be accused of cashing in on World Cup fever.
And the omens are not good.
The last time the Prime Minister attempted to prove his allegiance to England, was in 2006 when he invited journalists to his Downing Street apartment to watch the home side play in a World Cup fixture.
But he enraged his fellow Scots - and some Englishmen - by showing his support for Sven's team.
Speaking today about Mr Brown's latest plans to back the national side, his spokesman said: "He has been invited to attend by the RFU and he does plan to attend."
The Prime Minister joked at his No 10 press conference last week that once Scotland had been knocked out of the tournament, he had no trouble switching his allegiance.
He told reporters: "The one barrier to my support for England in the World Cup final has been removed by the unfortunate defeat of Scotland."
The only remaining barrier to the Prime Minister attending the final would be if the EU summit he is attending in Lisbon over-runs.
It is due to finish on Friday, and diplomats expect it to end on time.
After England's semi-final victory over France, Mr Brown praised the team coach and captain.

Supporters: The Prime Minister will join thousands of England fans
"This is a proud day for the country and I wish the team the best of luck for the final."
The Prime Minister was a keen rugby player until a playing accident cost him the sight of one eye as a teenager.
