Graduate supernanny wanted to cook, clean, teach calculus...

Modern parents are looking for university educated "supernannies", according to a new study.

Researchers found that nannies were often expected to be capable of everything from helping children with a second language to assisting music practice as well as cooking healthy meals and looking after household chores.

Half of parents admitted they hired nannies to "act as a surrogate parent and teacher, while they get more time to spend at work and progress their career" in the study for classifieds website Gumtree.com.

For the supernannies it means better pay, with one in 10 now earning £500 a week or more. Some parents were also prepared to offer expensive perks such as spa membership to entice the nanny of their choice.

"They are more likely to be a university honours graduate who pulls out a foreign-language dictionary, a guitar, flashcards, a first-aid box and a Jamie Oliver school dinner menu from their bag of nanny tricks," Gumtree said. "They are as comfortable with calculus as cooking; homework as housework and fluent with a second language."
