The Israeli endured a turbulent time when he took over from Jose Mourinho last month with doubts about the switch threatening to tear the squad apart.
Players' crisis meetings were held and Grant had to convince the club's fans that he was up to the job.
After five successive wins, he feels he has seen off the worst period and is now set to be offered a long-term manager's contract. But former director of football Grant insists he could not have guided Chelsea out of their slump without Terry helping to hold the squad together.
He said: "Everyone wants to hear about leadership and, in a very difficult time, Chelsea had a great captain. Part of the progress which started six weeks ago belongs to him. He was a great leader and I want him back as soon as possible."
Grant is particularly grateful for the way Terry convinced Chelsea's key players to put aside any differences with the club following Mourinho's departure.
The defender is recovering from a minor knee operation and will miss tonight's Carling Cup match against Leicester at Stamford Bridge, but could be back to face Everton on Saturday.
Shaun Wright-Phillips, Florent Malouda and Andriy Shevchenko could all start tonight, while Claudio Pizarro and Scott Sinclair are also hoping to be involved.
