Gunman Tasered after shots fired at police car

A gunman who shot at a police officer was caught after a chase through east London today.

The man in his twenties is suspected of being responsible for a shooting last night.

He was stopped at 8am while driving near a parade of shops in Loughton by officers responding to a report of a suspicious car.

As officers approached the man and his female passenger a shot was heard, say witnesses. It struck a police car's windscreen, narrowly missing a sergeant sitting in the front seat. The suspect drove off, pursued by two police cars and a helicopter. He was stopped at 9.30am in Upper Rainham Road, Hornchurch and Tasered. A shotgun was found nearby.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of shooting a man who walked into Queen's Hospital in Romford last night with a wound in the shoulder. The female passenger was also detained.
