Gymnast, 13, found hanged in her room
14 August 2007
Kelsey Jade Winter, described as a bubbly and hard-working girl, was discovered by her stepfather on Sunday afternoon.
She was upstairs while the rest of the family prepared lunch.
When she failed to respond to calls for her to come to the dinner table Mark Winter, 30, went to check on her.
He tried to resuscitate her while her mother, Carolann, 29, called an ambulance.
But Kelsey Jade was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the Memorial Hospital in Darlington. Last night, her distraught parents paid tribute to their daughter.
Mrs Winter, who is 33 weeks pregnant with her fourth child, said: "Kelsey Jade was a bubbly and well-liked girl who always looked forward to spending time with her friends. She was very sensitive too.
"She loved gymnastics and recently won a trophy from her club for being the most improved this year. She had worked so hard and was so proud of her achievement.
"My husband and I are devastated by the discovery and are trying to come to terms with it all." Kelsey Jade lived with her parents in Barnard Castle, County Durham, along with her brothers, James, eight, and Josh, two.
She attended Teesdale Comprehensive School and was a member of Teesdale Sports Centre's Gymnastics Club, where she was named most improved gymnast for 2007.
It is thought Kelsey Jade had gone to her room at around 1.30pm, 45 minutes before Mr Winter found her.
Durham Constabulary confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances. It is not known why Kelsey Jade might have hanged herself.
An inquest into her death will be opened today.
