Half of places in university clearing go in four days

The scramble for university places intensified today as students snapped up half the clearing vacancies in only four days.

More than 14 candidates are now fighting for every remaining place through clearing amid unprecedented demand for degrees.

Admissions service Ucas said 12,318 of the estimated 22,000 clearing vacancies have already been filled, four days after A-level results were released last week.

This meant 7,500 more students had found a place through the system than at the same point last year.

Analysts believe that the recession is behind a surge in university applications from mature students, who may have lost their jobs or be trying to improve their skills.

Thousands of sixth-formers have been forced to consider part-time study at the Open University or Birkbeck because full-time courses are full.

An extra 60,000 candidates applied to university this year but ministers funded only 13,000 more places.
