Half of the disabled are living in poverty

Half of all disabled people are trapped in poverty, a report has revealed.

At least 3million are living below the breadline - and the figure could be 5.5million, according to Leonard Cheshire Disability.

The report found that 50 per cent of disabled people are unemployed, while those in employment are much more likely to be in low-paid jobs.

Living costs for the 11million disabled are 25 per cent higher than for those without disabilities.

This is because they have to pay for adaptations to homes, social care and mobility and communications aids, such as wheelchairs and hearing aids.

Taking these costs into account puts the poverty figure at 5.5million, said the report, Disability Poverty in the UK.

The charity made 35 recommendations to reduce disabled poverty, including extending the Winter Fuel Allowance - the £200 payment made by the Government to help pensioners pay for heating and lighting - to all disabled people.

Report author Guy Parckar said: "Our report sets out a route for the Government to start the work to end disability poverty."
