Half of voters say Brown would 'struggle to run a whelk stall'
30 November 2007
A separate survey also found many thought his regime would struggle "to run a whelk stall", let alone a country.
The Populus poll on sleaze revealed the public felt Labour's reputation was now more tarnished than John Major's in the 1990s.
Back then, voters turfed out the Conservatives after becoming disillusioned by a raft of scandals, including the cash-for-questions row and a string of MPs' extra-marital affairs.
But 53 per cent of those questioned by Populus now believe Labour is sleazier.
The poll, for the BBC's The Daily Politics, is one of the first since the donations scandal broke.
A separate YouGov poll had already revealed the Tories have opened up their biggest lead over Labour since Margaret Thatcher's heyday.
It put the Conservatives on 43 per cent, ahead of Labour on 32 and the Liberal Democrats on 14.
Some 52 per cent said Mr Brown's party was so incompetent it "could not run a whelk stall".
