Hatton in talks for De la Hoya battle at Wembley

Wembley will host its first super-fight next May if Ricky Hatton can dethrone Floyd Mayweather in their world title showdown here on Saturday.

Oscar De la Hoya, the sport's "golden boy", today declared he is ready to take on Hatton at the new Wembley in front of 80,000 fans on 3 May, a fortnight before next year's FA Cup Final.

Talks are well under way between De La Hoya, co-promoter of this weekend's fight at the MGM Grand, and Hatton's camp for a contest which would earn the Briton even more than the £10million he is set to rake in from the Mayweather clash. The fight could be made regardless of Saturday's result.

De La Hoya, who lost to Mayweather but who has since been helping Hatton prepare for the fight, said: "I would fight in London in a heartbeat. I want to fight the biggest fight and it would be an honour to go to Hatton's capital city and fight him there in front of 80,000 supporters.

"These are the kinds of fights that people want and it could happen. When I fought Mayweather it felt like a sparring session. He didn't want to fight. I want to please my fans in my last two fights and we all know a fight with Ricky Hatton is going to be exciting."

Hatton's lawyer Gareth Williams said: "The chances of the fight taking place are very strong. Wembley would be the perfect venue and we could look at selling in excess of 80,000 tickets."
