Hear ye! Cheapside to be reborn

London's 1,000-year-old high street - now charmless and traffic dominated - is to be revitalised as a weekend shopping destination.

Cheapside, between St Paul's and Bank, dates from the 11th century and was once a premier shopping thoroughfare. Cheap is derived from the Saxon word for "deal".

But the Blitz and Sixties reconstruction left it a "clone street" used mainly by office staff at lunchtimes. Now the City of London wants to turn it into a "Covent Garden of the City".

Under a £4 million scheme the harsh "office canyon" feel will be softened by widening pavements, planting trees and making it easier to cross. A more diverse range of shops will be encouraged.

It will be reinvented as a cultural location hosting the Lord Mayor's Show, Christmas markets, plays, and performance artists. The plans can be seen from Tuesday at the City of London marketing suite in Basinghall Street. A medieval market will be recreated on 19 July, with a flock of geese being driven down the street.
