Hide away cigarettes, health chief tells shops

Cigarettes should be removed from display in shops and supermarkets, says the Government's chief medical officer.

Sir Liam Donaldson suggested that keeping them under the counter would start to "denormalise" the habit and help smokers resist temptation.

In an interview with a Sunday newspaper, he said other radical proposals were needed including outlawing the sale of packets of ten cigarettes to deter consumption among children; reducing the number of cigarettes which can be brought in from other EU countries from 3,200 to 200; and putting graphic picture warnings of blocked arteries, rotten teeth and gangrene on cigarette packets.

Sir Liam also warned that parents who smoke in front of their children are risking the youngsters' health and promised a renewed advertising campaign to try to educate them of the dangers.

Simon Clark, director of the pro-smoking group Forest, said: "There cannot be a sane adult in the UK who is not aware of the health risks of smoking.

"If the Government seriously thinks it will stop people smoking by simply removing cigarettes from display, it is living in Cloud Cuckoo Land."
