Historians dig their way out of the credit crunch in Royal park

Historians have joined forces with the Royal Parks to build a Dig For Victory allotment in St James's Park.

Inspired by the thrifty measures adopted by Londoners during the Second World War, the plot, organised by the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms, is full of money-saving tips as well as fruit and vegetables.

Phil Reed, the museum's director, said: "In our throwaway society, committing food and materials to the waste bin is of no consequence. We are only gradually realising that the planet can no long sustain this. The Dig For Victory project is our small attempt to shift the focus back to sustainable living habits and demonstrate how we can benefit from and actually improve our lives by recycling." Allotment tips include:

Using vegetables as an ornamental feature. Climbing beans look good in a border or in a container on a patio.

Utilising limited space by planting fast-growing crops, such as radish and lettuce, in between rows of slower maturing vegetables.

Old net curtains can be used to protect plants from pests.

Eros Card holders can get two adult tickets for the price of one at the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms until the end of next month.
