A hit-and-run driver who killed a 91-year-old woman as she crossed a road has walked free from court with a £700 fine.

Simon Dale hit Marged Griffiths on the A487 just outside Cardigan and drove off. One of her shoes was found almost 50 yards away.

After the accident last November, Mrs Griffiths was taken to West Wales General Hospital 30 miles away in Carmarthen where she died hours later.

Dale, 29, of Aberporth, Dyfed, was arrested the following day and charged with failing to stop following an accident and failing to report an accident.

But even though he already had a speeding conviction, magistrates let him off with the fine and eight points on his licence after he pleaded guilty to both offences yesterday.

Last night Mrs Griffiths's family hit out at the punishment.

Her nephew, John Parsons, of Cardigan, said: 'We are all absolutely disgusted by the leniency this man has been shown.

'It is very disappointing. There is no way the punishment will act as a deterrent.

' This man should have, at the very least, been disqualified. What price a life?'
