HIV fear for 400 dental patients

More than 400 patients face an agonising wait to discover if they have been infected with HIV or the hepatitis virus at their dentist's surgery.

Chris Bohler's practice was closed after a patient complained about his treatment and found 'hygiene was below the standards expected'.

Health officials have 'serious concerns about hygiene standards' practised by Mr Bohler, a German national who qualified in Hungary.

The alarm was triggered after he was suspended from all practice in late January.

But he continued treating patients privately at his surgery in Tipton, West Midlands, until this month.

It is believed that the practice was closed amid fears over improperly cleansed instruments rather than any illness carried by the dentist.

Infection may have been spread among patients if equipment was not cleaned properly between treatments.

A spokesman for Sandwell Primary Care Trust said there was concern about a small risk of cross-infection.

The trust had already seen 200 patients by last Wednesday. Another 200 have been booked to attend screenings but officials admitted that there are likely to be more still to contact them.

The worried girlfriend of one former patient said: "He was treated by this man many times and had three teeth removed and one crowned.

"He has had numerous infections and his bite is totally out."

Robert Bacon, PCT chief executive, said: "We have serious concerns about hygiene standards practised by Chris Bohler."

The PCT inspected the surgery on August 7 and promptly closed it.

Officials terminated Mr Bohler's NHS contract after he was suspended by the General Dental Council in January pending an inquiry but he carried on seeing private clients.

A GDC spokesman yesterday refused to comment on the reason for the suspension.

Patients who contact a helpline on 0845 603 8514 will be offered tests. The results will take up to three weeks.
