Finding a bag full of cash on your back seat is the stuff of dreams. But it was nearly a nightmare for cabbie Trevor Hamilton.
He was on the point of throwing away the lumpy Sainsbury's carrier bag left in his taxi by an elderly man when he checked the contents .. and found a cheque book and £9,000 in used notes.
The bag had been in the back of his taxi for several hours until a customer pointed it out.
It's not often that a passenger leaves nine thousand pounds behind in a taxi
Mr Hamilton, a taxi driver for 28 years, called his employers who told him the loss had already been reported but that the owner had given up the cash as lost for ever.
Mr Hamilton had picked the man up at around noon last Thursday in Boscombe, Dorset, and taken him home to nearby Southbourne.
'I have had a lot of things left in my taxis, but this just about tops it all,' said Mr Hamilton.
'I was about a minute away from throwing it away, but I thought I'd check in case the contents were important.'
His firm, United Taxis, told police who located the owner, who promptly gave Mr Hamilton a 'generous tip' for his honesty.
Administrator Barbara MacKenzie said: 'He had actually written off this money and gave a nice tip to Trevor. I wouldn't have written off this amount, I think I would be slightly apoplectic.'
