Hospital data on 20,000 patients stolen

The personal details of thousands of patients have been stolen from a London hospital.

Six laptop computers, which held information on 20,000 people, were taken from private offices at St George's hospital, Tooting during the 7/8 June weekend. They contained names, dates of birth, postcodes and hospital numbers.

Police are investigating the theft, which was from offices only accessible by using a swipe card and key.

David Astley, chief executive of St George's Healthcare NHS Trust, said such sensitive information was normally held on secure central network drives but because of a technical problem it was being temporarily stored on the laptops.

He added: "We offer all our patients our sincere apologies.

"We believe the data will almost certainly be wiped by the thief so he can get a quick sale. All data on the laptops was password protected and personal information such as postcode was hidden, although the patient's name and hospital number was shown."
