How architects work... after a fashion

Groundbreaking designs in fashion and architecture from Issey Miyake to Thomas Heatherwick are being featured in a new exhibition at Somerset House.

The show, Skin And Bones, explores how the worlds of architecture and fashion are increasingly relying on the same new software and materials technology.

Claire Catterall, the curator, said: "Historically, you can see that buildings and clothing have always echoed each other in form.

"At the time of Art Nouveau, there were very flowing, beautiful dresses and wonderful flowing buildings. If you look back to Greek times, the same detailing appears in both columns and in dresses.

"But this is something new that has happened in the last 30 years and is quite unique.

"Developments in computer technology software and also materials technology have made things much more interesting. Practices in both fashion and architecture are swapping and sharing ideas."

Thomas Heatherwick said the same construction devices worked to bring both clothes and buildings alive. "A skirt's pleating creates light points and shadows for the garment, adding aesthetic definition and the same can work with a building."

Architect Zaha Hadid said both architecture and fashion were created for the well-being of users. "As a practice we have been exploring the potential for a new language of design and architecture - incorporating a sculptural sensibility where the rhythm of folds, niches, recesses and protrusions follow a coherent formal logic."

The exhibition includes more than 200 works by more than 50 architects and fashion designers.

Designed by architect Eva Jiricna, Skin And Bones: Parallel Practices In Fashion And Architecture is at Somerset House from Thursday until 10 August.
