Hummingbirds fly into London Zoo

They are smaller than a tennis ball, have startling green plumage and come from Ecuador.

Two rare Amazilia hummingbirds are the latest additions to London Zoo - and the only members of their species on show in Britain.

They will be introduced at Easter and staff hope they will breed. The hummingbirds weigh 0.18oz and are just three inches in length.

A zoo spokeswoman said: "Hummingbirds are very delicate, difficult to keep and are not bred very often. They are also very particular about their environment and what they eat. They are unusual and unique birds."

The newcomers will join 50 other species of birds flying freely in the zoo's Blackburn Pavilion, which was built in 1883 and refurbished in March.

The spokeswoman said: "Visitors will be faced with beautiful, tropical planting in a tranquil, balmy atmosphere with birdsong and flashes of colour."
