I found fraudsters but my case was ignored

City worker Dave Consalvi says police failed to help him when he was the victim of credit card crime.

The 36-year-old banker first lost £1,500 after his debit card was cloned. A week later his credit card was stolen.

But despite discovering the debit card cloner's car registration, finding CCTV film of his credit card being used and giving police the information, neither case was pursued.

Mr Consalvi, from Rickmansworth, said: "I went through the shop's CCTV footage with the manager until we found some great pictures of the two guys using my stolen credit card. I went to the police station and told them it was all there but they never went to look at it. They didn't do anything when I handed them the cloner on a plate either."

He is unsurprised that 52 per cent of crimes in London are "screened out" by police. He said: "People are losing faith in the police and after this experience, if I was burgled I'd only report it for insurance purposes. I don't think anyone seriously expects the police to do anything these days.

"When a colleague's car was damaged by a driver who gave false details, my colleague found the real name, address and phone number and gave them to the police. Four months later he was told, 'We will not pursue this at this time.' "

Yet police hunted Mr Consalvi down for doing 8mph over the speed limit. He had just moved so the address on his registration document was wrong. "More than two years later a bobby turned up on my doorstep with a warrant for my arrest. I was furious."
