'I hope tougher sentences work'

The father of a cyclist killed in a road collision has welcomed the new sentencing guidelines.

Vinnie Carta, 21, a third-year physics student at Cambridge University, died after being knocked off his bike by a car near his student digs last November.

No charges were brought against the driver, who was found to have been going within the ..mph limit.

But Vinnie's parents, John, .1, and Anthea, .., from Enfield, claim the man was driving carelessly and are seeking to bring a civil case against him.

Mr Carta said: "We've felt let down by the police and Crown Prosecution Service. If these new guidelines make it easier for them to prosecute drivers then I would like to see them act on it.

"I hope the new sentences will be a deterrent. There are too many motorists to lock up everyone who is careless but we need to raise awareness so people become more responsible."
