I only met David Cameron once before selection, says ‘cutie’ candidate Joanne Cash

Tory candidate Joanne Cash has rejected "cronyism" claims that she was selected for a key seat in London because of her close links to David Cameron.

Ms Cash, who hopes to unseat Labour's Karen Buck from the marginal Westminster North, hit back at suggestions that she received favourable treatment from the party leader.

The 40-year-old barrister, dubbed Cameron's "cutie", will meet local Conservative ward chairmen tomorrow to try to heal divisions caused by recent rows with party activists.

Ms Cash, who is pregnant, dramatically resigned her candidacy after Westminster North Conservative Association chairwoman Amanda Sayers was elected to a top post last week.

The Tory leadership intervened in the row and Mrs Sayers was ousted a day later. Ms Cash then withdrew her resignation. Allies of Mrs Sayers this week condemned her treatment by the party and some suggested that Ms Cash had not been "pulling her weight" in street campaigning.

Others claimed that she owed her candidacy to the fact that she and husband Octavius Black were friends of Mr Cameron and his wife. Mr Black was at Eton with the Tory leader.

Now Ms Cash has hit back through Twitter, pointing out that she had met Mr Cameron only once before being selected, that she met her husband after being selected and that she was unrelated to Tory MP Bill Cash.

"1.no relat to MP Bill 2.met husband Mar 07 after selected nov 06 3.met DC once b4 selected," she wrote.

At the height of the row, some local Tories were incensed when they saw Ms Cash's Twitter page included the phrase "RIP Dinosaurs". Last night, she explained, again on Twitter, that the message was "posted re expenses scandals and my desire for reform".
