Ice ship skipper could face two years jail

The captain of an Arctic cruise ship hit by a 'tsunami' of ice and water while skirting an unstable glacier could face up to two years in jail for endangering his British passengers.

Police said Russian-born George Zhelenin - accused of recklessly steering the ship too close to the ice to thrill the tourists - would be questioned on suspicion of breaking ship safety rules.

In total, 17 Britons onboard the £2,500 sightseeing tour were hurt in Wednesday's incident 310 miles north of Norway.

Last night, four elderly tourists with serious injuries remained in a Norwegian hospital.

Other passengers described how the 100ft glacier broke with a deafening crack and collapsed into the water, sending a huge wave towards their vessel, the Alexey Maryshev.

Freezing water and blocks of ice were swept along the deck, leaving passengers clinging to the ship's railings for their lives.

The cruise's Surrey-based tour operator, Discover the World, which has said the captain will never work for it again, promised passengers would be offered compensation on an individual basis.
