Immigration control watchdog admits it employed illegal worker

Red-faced: The immigrant managed a cleaning team

The Government department responsible for tracking down illegal immigrants was forced to admit yesterday that one was working in its offices.

The breach at the UK Border Agency is
particularly embarrassing because it had threatened to ‘name and shame’ companies which gave illegal immigrants jobs.

A spokesman said the individual was
employed by a contractor, and managed a team of cleaners at its base in Liverpool.

The person involved was arrested on
June 25 for ‘illegal entry without leave’,
and has since been deported, he added.

It is not known how long the illegal immigrant had worked at the public
inquiry office - which considers ‘straightforward’ immigration applications.

Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman Chris Huhne said: ‘It is hard to believe ministers’ crowing about their crackdowns on illegal workers when their flagship agency is employing them.’

The incident emerged more than two years after five Nigerian illegal immigrants were discovered working at immigration offices.

That failure in 2006 led former Home Secretary John Reid to condemn his department as ‘not fit for purpose’.

Since then the Government has admitted that thousands of illegal immigrants were granted licences to work as security guards, ending up at Scotland Yard, Whitehall departments, and even protecting the Prime Minister’s car.
