Indiana Brown versus Double-O Dave in new Commons blockbuster

Gordon Brown and David Cameron revealed their differences go beyond politics  -  and even extend to the action men they idolise at the movies.

The Prime Minister confided that he is a fan of swashbuckling archaeologist Indiana Jones, whose fourth movie in the series is currently packing cinemas.

His Tory rival, meanwhile, confessed to being a fan of suave spy James Bond.

Mr Brown may well see himself as being in the same mould as his hero. He read history at university and has a passion for globe trotting, albeit to negotiate treaties rather than defeat Nazi grave-robbers.

It also underlines his fondness for Americana because the character, played by Harrison Ford, was born in Princeton, New Jersey.

Asked if he was a Jones or Bond man in an interview, Mr Brown replied unhesitatingly: 'Indiana Jones, Indiana Jones, but I still like James Bond.'

In his fantasies, Mr Cameron might see some parallels between his life and his fictional pin-up. The character from Ian Fleming's novels went to Eton and was expelled after some trouble involving a maid.

Mr Cameron also went to Eton and was almost expelled for dabbling with cannabis.

Asked which of the two film characters he preferred, he said: 'I'm a big Bond fan.

'I think I've probably seen every Bond film more than three times, which is quite tragic. I even caught a bit of From Russia With Love yesterday on ITV 7 or somewhere.'

Mr Cameron is a life-long Bond fan. As a boy his bookshelf bore all the Fleming novels in chronological order.

Of the two action heroes, Bond (like Tory leaders) has been continually replaced with younger models and the latest incarnation, Daniel Craig, is hailed as the best for a generation.

By contrast, the Jones movie franchise has stuck with Harrison Ford, who is looking distinctly older and more baggy-eyed at the age of 64.

Mr Brown may be pleased with the fact that although the latest Jones movie, Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, was panned by many critics, it has been a success at the box office.

The 22nd Bond film, Quantum Of Solace, is due out in November.
