Should the City give more to good causes?
London Influentials debate 2007: Wednesday 12 December: Tate Modern, Bankside, London, SE1 9TG

One of the most pressing issues facing London today is the gap between rich and poor - one commentator has even suggested that if something isn't done to correct the imbalance violence may result.

Right at the heart of the controversy is the City and the huge earnings its stars enjoy.

This debate will explore whether the City is doing enough to alleviate concern - and ask if it could do more?

But, City firms are entitled to question, why should they suffer for their success? And if society expects them to, will it drive them away?

It's a riveting dilemma - to which there is no clear-cut answer.

Debating this motion will be: Lord Griffiths of Fforestfach, Vice Chairman Goldman Sachs International, Will Self, Author and Evening Standard Columnist, Camila Batmanghelidjh Executive Director Kids Company, John Studzinski Chief Executive Officer The Blackstone Group, Arki Busson Chairman EIM Ltd and ARK, Simon Woodroffe OBE, Founder YOCAPITAL! Company. In The Chair is Chris Blackhurst, City Editor Evening Standard.
