Inner London is richest part of EU

Inner London is the richest region in the European Union, according to a report.

The wealth per inhabitant in the centre of the capital is three times the EU average, easily beating nearest rivals Luxembourg and Brussels.

The index by the EU's statistical arm is strong evidence of London's attraction as a centre of finance, entertainment and wealth creation.

The relaxed tax regime is also seen as a factor in attracting the richest entrepreneurs. Taking a score of 100 as the average wealth per person across the EU, Inner London scores

303. Critics will say the numbers are skewed by the 350 people in Britain with a reputed fortune of more than £200 million, most of whom live in central London.

The small number of City traders who get multi-million-pound bonuses each year also boost the average.

Inner London comprises Camden, Hackney, Hammersmith & Fulham, Haringey, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Lewisham, Newham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth and Westminster.

Outer London is just above the average with a score of 108.5. In other parts of the country, Cornwall has a rating of 77.4, while Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire score 168.

The 15 lowest ranked regions are in Bulgaria, Romania and Poland.
