Iran hostage Mr Bean branded 'disgraceful' by his own mother

His admission that he cried himself to sleep after his captors stole his iPod led to Iranian hostage Arthur Batchelor being branded a national embarrassment.

He was also condemned for bringing shame on the Royal Navy after pictures of him poking fun at his ordeal emerged this weekend.

But the 20-year-old operator mechanic came in for some truly fierce words yesterday when he was condemned by his own mother.

Mockery: Iran hostage Arthur Batchelor on his release and, below, with a friend at a nightclub

Marie Perren, 43, says she was horrified after seeing the photographs of her son wearing a blindfold and wielding a toy gun.

She described his behaviour as 'disgraceful' and claimed many people were 'disgusted' by his antics in a nightclub.

The pictures taken by the club DJ show him blindfolded with a tea-towel and laughing as a friend pretends to hold him at gunpoint.

Another picture shows the 5ft 2in tall crewman pulling a face while the same friend holds a toy rifle under his chin.

In a further shot, taken in the nightclub 10 days ago, Batchelor wears a woman's nightie as he poses with three female clubbers.

His mother said: "I am just disgusted with him. A lot of people are not very pleased. I did not think he would do something like that. All his Navy friends are going to be annoyed with him now.

"He should not have done it. It is disgraceful. It was surprising to see him in all the newspapers like that. He could get kicked out of the Navy for it."

Mrs Perren, who lives with her husband Chris, 48, in Exeter, Devon said her son - who was raised by her sister-in-law Maggie Phillips, 46 - should have known better.

"When I see him I am going to say I am disappointed with him because I do not think he should have done that when people have lost their lives in Iraq, " she said.

"I do not know what the female hostage, Faye Turney, is going to think about it."

The photos were taken at Jesters nightclub in Plymouth as he enjoyed two weeks compassionate leave after being held hostage.

But instead of recuperating after his 13-day ordeal onlookers, said Batchelor has been living the high life and acting like a celebrity.

Batchelor and 14 service personnel were seized last month while patrolling in disputed waters between Iraq and Iran.

He and Leading Seaman Faye Turney, 26, later sold their stories after being given the green light by the Government.

The outcry that followed led to the launching of two inquiries and a U-turn by the Government which then banned the other former hostages from speaking about their ordeal.

Batchelor, who serves on the HMS Cornwall, is due to report back for duty with the other service personnel.
