Is Gabby gabbing a bit TOO much at the Olympics?

The BBC is devoting more of its daily Olympics highlights show to presenter Gabby Logan than to any of the individual sporting events.

Research found a quarter of the first four instalments of Olympics 2008: Games Today was taken up by Logan.

In almost four hours of broadcasting, she was seen talking for more than 55 minutes. This time included long discussions with several of the retired sports stars the BBC is using for its coverage of the Games in China.

The host was given more than four times the air time devoted to cycling - a sport in which Team GB has won gold and silver.

Logan, 35, a former gymnast who represented Wales at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, has dominated early evening coverage on BBC1. The only competition came from Michael Phelps, the US swimmer who lit up the Games by winning a record number of gold medals. He had 25 minutes of broadcast time.

Olympics 2008: Games Today is on from 7pm to 8pm. The show averaged 3.2m viewers on Saturday, losing out to Brendan Fraser in The Mummy, which pulled in 3.6m viewers on ITV1.

On Sunday, it averaged 3.6m, an 18per cent share of the audience, but again it was beaten by ITV1.

Estimates for viewing figures during the week are slightly over four million.

The number of viewers raises concerns over value for money being delivered to TV licence fee payers. The BBC has 493 people covering the Games - more than the entire Team GB squad. The corporation shows the Games live through the night and in the morning, and digital viewers can use the "red button" to watch the sport of their choice.

A BBC spokesman said: "Games Today is getting big audiences and high appreciation scores."
