ITN news anchor: I'm ashamed I didn't stop Tube thug who abused pregnant woman
03 March 2008
Steve Scott, who presents weekend bulletins on ITN, intervened when the foulmouthed passenger abused the terrified woman - but confessed he felt "guilty" he had not done more to halt the verbal attack.
The anchor, a father of two, said in a Bristol newspaper column: "I was on a crowded Tube in London, standing next to a pregnant woman.
"A man with a wild, violent look in his eyes squeezed into the carriage. He seemed unsteady and before long was pushing into her.
"She, in the least provocative way possible, asked him to be careful pointing out she was expecting.
"The bile that then spewed from his mouth was not only unpleasant and aggressive, but also quite terrifying. He was shouting, he was shaking and every other word was a swear word."
Describing the action he took, Scott said: "I manoeuvred myself between him and her, and after the next stop ushered her to the sanctity of a seat further down the carriage.
"So was I a coward or did I deal with a potentially violent situation in the most sensible way? I console myself it was the latter, but I harbour guilty flashbacks."
