It's a nice day...to be down south: The sun is finally coming out

Spring may finally arrive for millions of Britons today as half of the country enjoyed the warmest day of the year so far.

A north-south divide will see temperatures reach 70F (21C) in the Midlands and southern England while the rest of the country experiences cloudy weather and showers.

Much of the country was covered in a blanket of snow last month, during the coldest Easter for 44 years but temperatures are about to rise

Rachel Vince, from MeteoGroup UK, said: "If you draw a line from Newcastle-upon-Tyne across to Anglesey, then south-east of that should experience generally good weather and sunshine although there is a small risk of afternoon showers.

"The best weather will be in East Anglia, the East Midlands and London, which should have the warmest weather we have seen all year."

She added: "North-west of that line will be more cloudy and temperatures at best will be 15c or 59f but many places won't even reach that."

The wet weather will spread across the country on Sunday from the North-West with temperatures not rising above 61f (16c) at best.

Thundery downpours are a possibility across the country and sharp showers could even bring flash floods to central and eastern England.

The warmer weather comes after a miserable start to spring.

Snow has continued to fall in various parts of the country in April - along with sleet, hail and heavy rain - in weather conditions more akin to the depths of winter.

The blizzards early in the month were described as the first significant April snowfalls since 1989.
