It's GB United: Britain to field a football team at 2012 Olympics

Spectators at London's 2012 Olympics could see England football stars like Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard going for gold after the chairman of the British Olympic Association has pledged to enter a Great Britain team in the games.

It will also add some extra glamour to the stands if WAGs like Coleen McLoughlin and Alex Curran attend to cheer them to victory.

England has not fielded a football team in the Olympics since 1972  when amateur players represented the country.

Now professional players under the age of 23 are allowed to take part as well as three over-age players.

That means at the London Olympics, stars like Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and John Terry - who by the summer of 2012 be aged 26, 32 and 31, respectively - could play in a team with young talent.

Chairman of the British Olympic Association Lord Moynihan said their participation would be a real boost to the already highly anticipated event.

He said: 'The impact of a British team on the public and their support of the Games will be enormous.

'We would also expect that team to be a strong medal contender and thereby generate tremendous excitement throughout the country. We must have a team in these Games and we will have a team.'

The players would represent Great Britain but will potentially be made up of all Englishmen - as the Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish are currently refusing to get involved.

They do not want to play under the banner of GB over fears it will harm their individuality.

However, the Olympic team could be led by a Scot - Alex Ferguson is tipped to be the manager.
