It's palm trees in Peckham as things start to hot up

Not the sort of exotic vista you would normally expect on a visit to Peckham.
The hitherto-unglamorous inner- city area of South-East London has until now been renowned for its tower blocks and the fact that Del Boy and Rodney Trotter live there in Only Fools and Horses.
However, thanks to a little imagination from the local authority and a spot of global warming, it now has a totally tropical taste.

In recent weeks, £30,000 has been spent planting palms along the central reservation-of the main thoroughfare, Queen's Road. Yuccas are also flourishing nearby.
They were chosen because they are far better able to adapt to the long dry summers which are expected to become the norm. Designer Julia Edwards said: "They reflect the multi-cultural diversity of Peckham."

Tropic of South-East London: Palms and uccas on display
Until recently, outdoor palm trees were restricted mainly to the south coast of England and balmy west coast of Scotland. But they are becoming an increasingly familiar sight.
'In the coming years, it may be just as common to see cabbage palms and olive trees in Britain,' said Guy Barter, of the Royal Horticultural Society.
