Jaguar escapes and kills man in hurricane

A jaguar that escaped when a tree fell on its cage at a Belize animal rescue centre during a hurricane mauled an American man to death.

The victim was a man called Bruce Cullerton, who had Belizean citizenship. His body was found near the animal centre with bites on the forearm and neck. He had apparently been dragged for some distance into the bushes.

Forestry officials were trying to recapture the big cat using traps baited with meat. The jaguar had been at the centre, near Belize City, for two years.

The category-one Hurricane Richard has battered the country's coast over the last few days.
