Jailed Natwest banker begs to be set free to hunt for his missing daughter

Natwest banker Gary Mulgrew has lodged a desperate appeal for clemency from American authorities who prosecuted him for fraud - to enable him to launch an international hunt for his missing daughter.

His lawyers have filed papers in Houston, Texas, begging for him to be allowed to return temporarily to the UK to start a High Court action to locate six-year-old Cara Katrina.

She is believed to have been snatched and taken to live in North Africa by her mother, Mulgrew's ex-wife Laura, who is understood to be in a relationship with a Tunisian known only as Abdul.

The court documents, seen by The Mail on Sunday, claim Mulgrew, 45, has been denied any contact with Cara Katrina for more than a year since her mother fled abroad.

Close friend Joe O'Brien said: "Only those close to Gary really know what he's been through. His life has been turned upside down.

"In the spirit of Christmas, if anyone knows anything which could help those of us who love and care about Cara Katrina find out where she is and how she's doing, I would beg them to get in touch."

Mulgrew, of Brighton, is awaiting sentence in Houston along with David Bermingham, of Goring, Oxfordshire, and Giles Darby, of Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire.

The trio, known as the NatWest Three, admitted corporate fraud while working for the bank's investment arm.

Mulgrew also has 12-year-old son Calum who lived with him after he split from his wife last year, but went to stay with relatives after the banker was extradited.

The court application states:

"Despite extensive efforts, he has been unable to confirm his daughter is safe. Given that Mr Mulgrew anticipates he will soon be remanded to prison, he has a short window of opportunity to obtain assistance from the UK courts and Government."
