Jamie Oliver TV show trainee faces jail over £1million gem raid

Tom Baisden has pleaded guilty to his part in the robbery

A chef trained by Jamie Oliver is facing jail after admitting his part in a £1million jewellery heist.

Tom Baisden, who appeared on Channel 4's Jamie's Kitchen in 2002 and on Jamie's Chef in 2007, initially told police he had been bound and beaten by the robbers.

But the 26-year-old later admitted he had been part of the gang which raided Southend Airport's cargo centre, stealing jewellery including 2,000 Cartier watches.

After the raid in May 2001, Baisden, from Thundersley in Essex, appeared at a press conference showing off his injuries and talking about his 'ordeal'.

But the former airport worker was eventually arrested and appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court where he admitted theft, conspiracy to steal and perverting the course of justice.

He was released on bail and will be sentenced in October.

A former drug addict, Baisden graduated from Jamie Oliver's Fifteen scheme and was then chosen to appear in the television show Jamie's Chef.

He wrote on a poetry website: 'I've spent most of my life getting into trouble.

'Then I got taken under the wing of Jamie Oliver who became a life coach for me.'
