Jill Dando murderer's second appeal set to go ahead

The man serving a life sentence for murdering TV presenter Jill Dando will learn within days whether he will get a second appeal.

Fresh doubt was cast over forensic evidence used against Barry George after experts disputed the prosecution's claims that residue from a fired gun found on his clothes matched that on her body.

The 47-year-old's conviction for the 1999 killing was investigated by the Criminal Cases Review Commission and it is thought that a fresh appeal will go ahead.

George was jailed in 2001 for killing the Crimewatch presenter outside her home in Fulham. His first appeal was rejected.

At his trial, experts argued the residue detected on him was "similar" to particles discovered on the presenter's clothes and hair.

But the CCRC last year sought a second opinion from specialists at Strathclyde police who disputed the claims. An insider in the CCRC said: "George's case has troubled people for a long time because there isn't a great deal of evidence against him and what there is is now open to different interpretations."
