Jon Sopel rode scooter to A&E after crash with broken hip

BBC presenter Jon Sopel rode in agony to hospital on his scooter for an operation on a broken hip after crashing, it emerged today.

He believed he had minor injuries after slipping on leaves in central London on his way to cover the spending review.

Passers-by offered to call an ambulance but the journalist, 51, from north London remounted and tried to ride on. "Finally the pain became unbearable," he said.

A source said: "He had to be helped off his scooter and into a wheelchair. Doctors were incredulous he'd ridden there with a broken hip. The op was successful and Jon is now recovering in hospital but will probably be off work for several weeks."
