Keep quiet and pay up, council tells megachurch

An Evangelical church has been issued with a noise abatement order to stop its huge Christmas services upsetting local residents.

The Kingsway International Christian Church expects 15,000 people to attend services in a large marquee at Walthamstow stadium on Christmas Day, 28 December and New Year's Eve.

As well as the noise abatement notice, Waltham Forest Council wants the church to contribute to the estimated £20,000 cost of paying for parking attendants and environmental health officers to work in the area.

The services, advertised with the slogan "don't take cover, take over", are exempt from planning permission and licensing because they are religious.

A council official said: "There was nothing we could do to stop it going ahead. These events will see a large number of people coming into the borough and we're trying to protect residents' interests.

"We will not hesitate to take action if the noise abatement notice is breached. We also think it is wrong that council tax payers should foot the bill."
