Ken Livingstone: I’ll have victims’ czar for London

Ken Livingstone today promised to appoint London's first Victims' Commissioner.

He said the post, should he win the 2012 mayoral race, would give a strong voice to victims of crime and push their needs higher up the agenda of the Met and City Hall.

The Commissioner would make sure there was a "victims' champion", who would report directly to the Mayor, in every borough to improve the support given to victims and witnesses.

The move suggests he has taken on board criticism that he failed to take public concern about the issue seriously enough during his time as Mayor.

On a visit to Brent, Mr Livingstone said: "When I talk to Londoners about their experiences of crime in the capital, they often tell me they are bewildered by the entire criminal justice system and do not receive the support they need.

"It is clear that far too few victims of crime understand the basis for sentencing policy and there is too much inconsistency in the level of support given to those who are affected by crime in London.

"It is time for the Mayor and criminal justice system to put the needs of the victims of crime first." Mr Livingstone is fighting former MP Oona King for the Labour candidacy,
