'Killer targeted women he thought no one would miss'

A ruthless killer removed two women from the "face of the earth" thinking that nobody would miss them, the Old Bailey heard today.

Delivery driver Derek Brown lured them from the streets of Whitechapel and they were never seen again - dead or alive, the jury was told.

They were young women who "scratched a living on the edge of society". Brown was convinced the police would never mount a major hunt for them - "but he was wrong", the court heard.

The alleged victims are illegal Chinese immigrant Xiao Mei Guo, 29, who sold counterfeit DVDs on the streets of Whitechapel, and drug addict and prostitute Bonnie Barrett, 24, from Canning-Town, who worked in the same area. Both women were taken back to Brown's flat in Rotherhithe during three weeks last summer where he murdered them and successfully disposed of their bodies.

Brian Altman QC, prosecuting, told the jury: "Not only have neither been seen or heard of again, neither women's body has been discovered despite a massive police investigation into their disappearances." Brown, 47, denies two charges of murder.

Mr Altman said Brown's motive for killing the women was unclear but that hints might emerge during the trial.

He pointed out that the prosecution does not have to prove a killer's motive for a successful conviction, nor produce a dead body to prove the victim had been murdered.

The case continues.
