Kingfishers thrive to make waterway return

Kingfishers are thriving in London's waterways despite the wet summer.

There have been 4,000 sightings of the brightly coloured bird across the country, a British Waterways' national waterway wildlife survey reveals.

The bird, which flourishes in healthy ecosystems, is fourth in the sighting table behind the mallard, swan and heron.

Various habitat improvement projects are now planned, including one on Regent's Canal in London.
