Kit your children out in £10 school uniform

A school uniform priced at less than £10 including shoes will hit stores next week. Asda says the "value" outfit from its George range will be the cheapest available for three- to six-year-olds.

Its launch reflects the increasingly competitive nature of the £1billion school uniform market.

Retailers compete annually to offer low prices ahead of the new school year.

Asda's outfit includes a polo shirt at 75p, trousers or skirt for £1.75, shoes for £4.50, and a sweatshirt at £1.75.

Underwear includes socks at 25p a pair, briefs at 29p a pair and vests at 67p. All underwear is sold in more expensively priced packs of between three and seven items.

Larger outfits for six- to 10-year-olds are priced at £12.96, rising to £13.96 for 10- to 12-year-olds.

Asda said its George uniform was "ethically" sourced from factories which are regularly audited.

Angela Spindler, managing director of George Global, said: "As we sell more school uniforms than anyone else in Britain, we want to put more money back into our customers' pockets, and that's exactly what we have done giving customers change from a tenner."

Asda said the school uniforms were rigorously tested to ensure the clothes were "durable". They are due to go on sale on Monday.
