Knightsbridge to get its own Gherkin

A diamond-shaped building designed by the Gherkin architect is coming to the heart of Knightsbridge.

Ken Shuttleworth's Brompton Diamond is being billed as a "mansion block for the 21st century". Its upper floors, encased in free-form mirrored glass on a conventional brick plinth, resemble a gem "bursting free" of its setting.

The eight-storey building will contain shops, a dozen flats and a basement with a pool. It will replace a Sixties block in Brompton Road.

Kensington and Chelsea gave planning permission for the scheme after a report described it as a listed building of the future.

Mr Shuttleworth said: "Our objective was to create a beautiful and distinctive block." However, 85 objections were logged against the proposal for developer Old Mill Ltd. English Heritage said it was "wholly inappropriate". The Ancient Monuments Society said it was "bordering on perverse".
