Her impromptu trip to the Brit School of Performing Arts and Technology turned into a scrum as pupils scrambled to catch a glimpse of her.
The 39-year-old singer's visit was linked to an award from the Music Industry Trust which she is set to receive later this month. It is bestowed annually to an individual who has made a distinctive and lasting contribution to the British music industry.
The award has raised more than £2.7 million for Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy and the Brit Trust. The money pays the fees of pupils at the Brit School - the only performing arts school in Britain to offer such a scheme.
Natasha Rocca, 17, said: "Kylie arrived to look around and see what the school had used the money from the Brit Trust to do."
Miss Rocca said pupils had no idea the star was going to turn up. "I've never seen news travel so fast. All of a sudden there were hundreds of people trying to speak to her.
"Her minders kept moving her on. She posed for a few pictures and shook people's hands. The whole school shut down for about half an hour." Miss Minogue later picked up a Q Idol award at the ceremony at the Grosvenor House hotel.
Performers to hail from the Brit School include pop stars Lily Allen and Kate Nash and singer Lemar. "They have been down here a few times but Kylie's one of the biggest stars in the world," said Miss Rocca.
