Lady Thatcher breaks arm in fall

Baroness Thatcher was in hospital tonight after breaking her arm in a fall. The former Prime Minister, 83, tripped in her bedroom and was taken to the Chelsea and Westminster.

The break is at the shoulder and cannot be immobilised in plaster, which means a longer and more painful recovery.

Although frail and banned by doctors from making big speeches, the first woman premier maintains a busy schedule. Friends are encouraging her to rest over the summer.

A spokeswoman said: "She has broken a bone in her upper arm. The hospital's decided, just to be sure, to keep her in for observation."

Private secretary Mark Worthington said: "Her spirits were quite good on the way to hospital, although she was in a bit of discomfort with the injury."

Lady Thatcher suffered a series of mild strokes in late 2001 and 2002 and had to cut back her public appearances.
