Lazy Brits spend more than 36 YEARS sitting on their bottoms

Britons spend more than 36 years of their adult lifetime sitting down, research has found.

Watching television, surfing the internet, driving and eating dinner all add up to an average of 14 hours and 28 minutes spent seated every day.

That is the equivalent of 18 days of each month with your feet up, or more than seven months every year.

Lazy nation: Brits spend a staggering 36 years of their adult lives sitting down

By contrast, we spend just one year and 22 days of our adulthood doing exercise – a mere six days per year.

Despite this, 62 per cent of the 2,000 people questioned considered themselves to be an active person.

The poll was carried out by the Walk for Skin 2008, supported by the skin product brand Sanex, which is raising money for the British Skin Foundation.

In a breakdown of how exactly we spend our time sat down, it found we spend three hours a day – 22 hours a week – in front of the computer at home.

We spend 49 days of every year watching television and five hours a week reading.

A similar number of hours is spent in the driver's seat.

Almost an hour a day is spent at the dinner table, and for two and a half hours a week we take a seat in the pub.

We spend 22 minutes every day sitting on the toilet – which adds up to five and a half days a year.
