Leading architect: Capital needs more river crossings

A leading London architect has called for more bridges to address the capital's "great north-south divide" and encourage greener modes of transport.

Chris Wilkinson, who designed the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, said hardly any new crossings had been created despite massive bankside development in recent years.

He would like to see at least two more pedestrian bridges in the heart of the city. Mr Wilkinson, who commutes by train from Dulwich to Farringdon daily, said: "Apart from the fine Millennium and Hungerford Bridges, we haven't managed to build any new bridges for centuries.

"Building bridges is a complicated business - it's costly, time consuming and you need an Act of Parliament - but if we are serious about improving this city's transport infrastructure and taking people out of their cars the issue cannot be ignored."

His ideas will feature alongside other projects to span London's weaterways - completed, under construction and at design stage - in an exhibition at the Building Centre in Store Street WC1.
